Principles of Entrepreneurship Instructor: Mrs. Shannon Monroe Course Description: Course Syllabus The Principles of Entrepreneurship curriculum will develop the minds and encourage critical thinking about the business world. Encouraging students to use critical thinking reinforced through integration of academics such as language arts, mathematics and social studies. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are service learning, field trips, and job shadowing. Simulation, professional development, projects, and teamwork, provide opportunities for application of instructional competencies. In this course, students evaluate the concepts of going into business for themselves and working for or operating a small business. Emphasis is on the exploration of feasible ideas of products/services, research procedures, business financing, marketing strategies, and access to resources for starting a small business. Students develop components of a business plan and evaluate startup requirements. English language arts and social studies are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate include cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. Apprenticeship is not available for this course. DECA (an association for Marketing Education students) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. (NCDPI 2014) Unit 1.00 Understand economics, planning, information management and communication skills (8%) 1.01 Career Planning My content of the Business Administration Core should be mastered in order for cluster-specific content to have relevance to student career planning. I will stress the importance of interpersonal skills needed in diverse societies. Students will Foster a realistic understanding of business creation and operation fostering an understanding and appreciation of business ethics 1.02 Understand economic system to be able to recognize the environment Students will gain economic system knowledge by Comparing an unfamiliar abstract idea with an already known mental image. It's like painting a picture in the listener's mind. What the utilization of analogies and comparisons does is to change the frame of reference and to force thinking in new and interesting ways to understand taxes and the economy. Participating in social experience student will gain the important steps to building a company and how it affects hiring, organizing, and inspiring a collection of people who typically need to get start-up funds from others, to buy things from other people, and, ultimately, flourish or fail together as a result of the ability to sell things to yet another group of people. 1.03 Identify sources of business start up in career-planning to enhance job-success potential We will design and use the business plan for venture planning and development and resource Describe ways in which a mission statement can facilitate venture planning. Discuss the role of financial forecasting and budgeting in venture planning. Identify internal and external analysis tools used for venture planning (e.g., SWOT analysis, market analysis, environmental scan, competitive analysis, sensitivity analysis, etc.). 1.04 Acquire information to guide business decision-making Students will understand how small business and entrepreneurship form relationships to form and drive a business. 1.05 Write internal and external and internal business correspondence to convey and obtain Students will write and submit papers to inquire of a business need. Unit 2.00 Understand Entrepreneurship (28%) Students will create opportunities to take risk as business owners; Taking Risk takers as entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs aid entrepreneurs in perceiving opportunities life experiences.
